Steve Verner, Jenny Verner, David Elliott, and Troy Church: The Plymouth Sky Sports Team

If you have a bucket list, chances are for many that the words "skydiving" appear. And if you've waited your whole life to check that item off your list, now is your chance. Located on the north end of Plymouth on Highway 31 at the Plymouth Municipal Airport, Plymouth Sky Sports opened this past March and has served over 400 customers. David Elliott and Troy Church opened Plymouth Sky Sports after working with Skydive Chicago for several years. David says he moved to the area to be closer to his family. David and Troy recruited Steve and Jenny Verner, also members of Skydive Chicago, to join them on their new Plymouth business venture. "Reach for the sky" is more than just a Pixar hero's mantra for this group of daredevil entrepreneurs.

If you are ready to reach for the sky and free fall at cheek blowing speeds for the first time, don't expect to do it alone. New divers are encouraged to try tandem diving first. In tandems, divers take a 20 minute safety class before flying up to around 10,000 to 13,000 feet, and free falling at 120 mile per hour while attached to an instructor who will help them land safely. If divers want to continue skydiving, Plymouth Sky Sports offers a solo training program which allows participants to safely skydive by themselves and eventually earn their skydiving license if they wish to do so. If that isn't enough of an incentive for you, Plymouth Sky Sports also offers discounts on Wednesdays as well as special deals for active or retired military members, birthdays, and groups.

"It's something that everybody should do once in their life," David says, although there are a few restrictions. To skydive here, you must 18 years or older, weigh roughly 230 lbs or less, and be in good physical condition. But aside from that, anyone can skydive. "The people who skydive with us come from all walks of life," David tells me. Recently, he assisted a 79 year-old woman on a skydive on her birthday. He's also seen numerous parents take their children skydiving as a high school graduation gift. "Maybe the parents figure if their kid doesn't make it, they won't have to pay for college," David jokes. But joking aside, skydiving is surprisingly safe, as long as you know your limits. Steve Verner has done over 15,000 successful dives, and the Plymouth Sky Sports team is diligent about following USPA and FAA safety guidelines. You're in good hands here.

That being said, skydiving is an extreme sport and should be treated as one. As David says, those who pursue it tend to "need more sugar in their cereal." But beyond that aspect of the sport, skydiving is about building confidence. David says that his favorite part about his job is watching his students and clients evolve from taking their first terrifying jump at 10,000 feet to wanting more and even working their way to becoming licensed skydivers.

So, if you want to take the plunge, visit Plymouth Sky Sports on 301 Airport Road in Plymouth. Who knows, maybe I'll join you!
